Chainsaws & Chuckwagons 2023

We interrupt our Michigan adventures blog series to bring you this most recent weekend's event of note from Frederick Colorado: Chainsaws & Chuckwagons - with the added feature of the Axe Women Loggers of Main Show!

The whimsy and quality of the chainsaw carvings was just as delightful as years past.
(I've included two photos of the first carving because of the 360 degree artwork.)

Intertwined two bald eagles, bear and raccoon

The eagles, bear and raccon and now an owl

The ultimate tiki bar with faces left & right and tropical scenes in the middle (palm trees, coconut drink, surfboard)
Now *this* is what you call a Tiki Bar!

Bear with a fountain of fish (large to small) coming out of its hands into a bowl held by a kneeling man

An eagle facing up and an eagle facing down, each with its talons in a fish held between them

A tall tree stump with a howling coyote on top and a bear below

A very bright striped tiger growling

Scary halloween figure with pumpkin head, pitchfork and scarecrow type body

2 bears in a boat, 3rd bear fishing off the back end, water bird sitting on the prow and sign saying no fishin' except bears

A male and female yeti hanging out in the back of a (real) pickup truck

A bear holding a daisy like flower bigger than the bear with a ladybug on the flower leaf
Note the ladybug on the leaf near his shoulder!

A bench with a fox playing the violin on one end and three frogs stacked along a tree stump on the other end looking like they're singing a chorus

A huge slab of wood with musical instruments and notes carved into it. The carver is painting a bit of it.

Now on to the Axe Women - a group of professional competitive Logging Sports Athletes which started in Maine but now has athletes from all over the country. In fact, one of the two women competing today is a CSU alum. The Axe Women include world champion choppers, sawyers, logrollers and axe throwers - and each of these skills was demonstrated today. One of this weekend's athletes is the only person (male or female) to logroll across the Mississippi River without falling in. (She went from Port Byron, Illinois to LeClair, Iowa in less than 30 minutes!)  She is going to attempt to do the same across the Missouri in September. This show was one impressive display of athleticism!

In the sawyer competition, each competitor has to cut 3 timber cookies off the end of the log, first with a downward stroke of the chainsaw, then an upward stroke, then another downward stroke.

In the chopper competition, each competitor stands on a log with their feet placed in carved out areas they've already chopped into the log - then they have to chop the log in half with an axe swinging down between their legs. This is the event I found to be most frightening. They actually wear chain mail socks to protect their feet and lower legs from being sliced by the axe.

The axe throwing event is just what it sounds like: throwing an axe toward a target - in this case, from 20 feet back. 4 points for a bullseye, 1 point less for each ring away from the bulls eye. The Master of Ceremonies highly encouraged the audience members to give it a try if they happen to have an axe throwing venue in their town.

Throwing the double-bladed, heavy, very sharp axe

And pulling the throw out from the big hunk of wood target.

The final event (final undoubtedly because the competitors get doused in the pool) was log rolling. Each competitor stands on their end of the log (a synthetic log filled with water) and attempts moves and tricks to get their competitor to fall off (no touching of your competitor allowed). It is legal to kick water into the face of your competitor, jump on your end of the log, jiggle, whatever. I don't know if it was because it was a hot day, but they did look like they were having fun!

Two logrollers, on the log, each concentrating on their competitor's feet
Concentrating on balance and each other's feet

And one falls in! We have a winner!
We have a winner!

Our Summer Michigan Trip - 2023. Festivities! Part 3 of ???

Northern Michigan is hopping in the summertime - and we hopped right into the hoppiness. Much to Kendall's delight, a few days after we arrived, Cheboygan, on the shores of Lake Huron, was hosting a car show. Much to my delight, one of my favorite runs (from Indian River to Topinabee on the North Central State Trail) was out that way. So I was more than happy to go to a car show if it meant I could make part of the trip on foot! It turned out the car show was in an absolutely gorgeous location, right on the shore of Lake Huron with Mackinac Island and the Mackinac Bridge off in the distance - and the show was quite manageable in size as the cars lined a fairly small circle drive.

As soon as I saw the artwork on the restroom of the
car show park, I knew this would be an O.K. event!

What's that toy dog doing to this spiffy car?

Kendall describes this McCormick Farmall as the
"Batmobile - if the Waynes were billionaire farmers"

Now we come to Kendall's favorite car of the show. Imagine his surprise when the owner invited him to sit in it!

He looks pretty good in it, eh?!

A week later, we went to the Bay Harbor car show - which, for some reason, attracts an astounding array of eye-popping cars. Being close to Petoskey, this time I got to run the entire wayto the car show.

Apparently, Bay Harbor car shows call for fancy hats!

Taz's favorite car was the Thomas Flyer - it offered the most shade!

Fortunately, there is more than just car shows to keep us entertained Up North!

For example: Petoskey hosted a Pride Parade again this year!

A wide variety of folks attended - including several churches with welcome rainbow signs and folks wearing an eclectic assortment of clothing choices

Flag waving ensued just prior to starting the parade to People's Park where we all gathered and cheered for all of the drivers who honked and waved as they passed by.

And of course there was the Fourth of July celebration - which started a day early with fireworks from Bay Harbor, followed by Petoskey's Fourth of July July 4th festivities including a parade, concert, and fireworks over the Bay - both sides of the Bay in fact as Harbor Springs and Petoskey decided to run their shows simultaneously this year. Lots of head swiveling going on.

Happy days all!
