70 in 70 - Number 12 - Fort Kearny

We have spent quite a bit of time in – or passing through – Kearney, Nebraska without ever having visited the Fort. Since we would be going right past it on the way to Sandhill Crane viewing, we thought we’d stop and poke around a bit.

Fort Kearny was built in 1848 and provided a safe haven for travelers on the Oregon Trail as well as a home station for Pony Express riders. When it was discontinued as a military post in 1871, buildings were torn down and the land was opened for homesteading. The Fort Kearny Memorial Association purchased the land in the 1920s and in 1959 Fort Kearny was designated as a state historical park.

Sandhill Cranes aren't the only birds to be found in Nebraska!
